Monday Mantras

I’m not a morning person, and I’m not a Monday person, and this is the hardest Monday of the entire year! This is the first Monday back to work after summer vacation, and that, my friends, is a BIG slap of reality in the face. Though I will suffer through this Monday with the rest of my colleagues with little grace and much complaining, during the school year I take a far more productive approach to getting the week off on the right foot.

My general rules about getting through Mondays.

  1. Hit snooze once not twice.
  2. Do my hair.
  3. Dress up.
  4. Pick a song to get the day going in the right direction.
  5. Internalize a mantra.

I reuse my mantras all the time. Some are better or worse for different moods and Mondays. Some come to me while I’m working, others while I’m running, others while I’m driving in the car doing nothing. But, however I find them, internalizing a good mantra can be the key to getting through not just Monday, but lots of other crap in life as well.

The mantra that’s kicking off this school year:

Calm, calm. No panic!

This was, at first, a running mantra. I used it to try to help slow my heart rate while running up a two-mile hill. It…kind of worked. But, if nothing else, it felt good to repeat it with each footfall. At least it beat the alternative, a screaming interior monologue of, “Why the hell did you think this was a good idea! You suck! Hills suck! You suck!”

I use my mantra in moments when things start to feel overwhelming or out of control. It is, in essence, a five second mini meditation that brings me back to a sense of being present in, and in charge of, the moment.

Try this for your Monday. Make your coffee, tea, orange juice…or, if you’re celebrating having survived Monday, perhaps you pick something stronger! Then take the next 3:57 and play the song below, chill out, clear your mind, and each time a thought presents itself, push it away and repeat to yourself, “Calm, calm. No panic!” And see if you aren’t a little more centered and ready to take on the day as the awesome human you are!

Cheers to you!
